JANFEB-CP-Terrible Hate Speech CPTournament: UH | Round: 2 | Opponent: | Judge: The standard of this round will be utilitarianism which states that the greatest good for the greatest amount of people is the best way to achieve morality. Utilitarianism prioritizes the pleasure of as many people as possible. I will provide 2 justifications: Justification 1: Util protects life first which is a prerequisite to any other value or standard. The Utilitarian Response. pg. 141-2. Robert Goodin is a fellow in philosophy at the Australian National Defense University. Now, I will present my counter plan. Part 1 is the Text: Part 2 is the competition: Part 3 is Net Benefits: C1: Hate speech causes hate crime. C2: Hate speech causes minorities to commit suicide. The more negative a nickname or slur used to refer to an immigrant group, the C3: Hate speech is a precursor to genocide. While hate speech can often be dismissed as bigoted ranting or merely painful words, it A hate speech ban is key to deter perpetrators of hatred from giving hate speech, thus avoiding all these impacts mentioned above. A hate speech ban would show bigots that their views are unwelcome. Jensen 93. Ejner J. JANFEB-CP-Trigger WarningsTournament: Seven Lakes | Round: 1 | Opponent: Salma Calvo | Judge: Students may disclose if they get mentally triggered by something out of their own free will and with knowledge of the fact that the professors and speakers will be informed. Part 2 is the Competition: The CP is mutually exclusive: The Aff may not have any content-based restrictions on free speech even if it is speech without a trigger warning. Only the Neg can restrict speech without trigger warnings. Plus, mandatory trigger warnings acts as an unconstitutional prior restraint against speech without trigger warnings. Doll 16: This analysis focuses on the use of a mandatory trigger warning policy. The Part 3 is the Net Benefits: Neg actually solves the Aff better because it links in to all of the Aff impacts by continuing to allow other forms of speech. Plus, education actually improves under the Neg. Under the Aff, trigger warnings are not mandatory, and people who have experienced trauma will be faced with a mental trigger and may be unable to focus on school. Neg solves this. Triggered reactions can be intense and unpleasant, and may even overtake our consciousness, as with 2. Turn: The aff perpetuates a culture of ableism by refusing to treat PTSD and other traumatic disorders as important enough to put trigger warnings for. Many of the folks who request content warnings are people dealing with PTSD. Symptoms of Finch 15: Telling people with serious disorders like PTSD, anxiety, or phobias to just “deal Part 4 is the solvency: Trigger warnings allow people to mentally prepare for the triggers and to employ techniques to help overcome it. Manne 15: As teachers, we can’t foresee every instance of potentially triggering material; some triggers are unpredictable. Even if my opponent can somehow prove that trigger warnings don’t work, mandatory trigger warnings still addresses mental illnesses such as PTSD as a serious problem and avoids stigmatizing people with these illnesses. This helps to solve ableism and oppression. If my opponent is planning to run theory, please ask me in CX whether or not I meet the interp in order to avoid frivolous theory. After this, we can work something out. If my opponent does not ask me, grant me an auto- I meet in order to deter not checking in CX. Also, PICs are key to real world education. Policymakers must present plans in order to try to pass them. PICs train people on how to present a plan and work to pass them. Real world education is most important because real world education is the best use of debate in the real world. | 2/13/17 |
JANFEB-FW-OppressionTournament: Any | Round: 1 | Opponent: Any | Judge: Any I value morality. Material inequalities are based in moral exclusion, which is flawed because exclusion is not based on dessert but rather on arbitrarily perceived difference. Morality mandates expression of all voices, which prohibits structural oppression. | 2/13/17 |
JANFEB-NC-Lay UtilTournament: Texas City | Round: 2 | Opponent: | Judge: My value is morality which tells us what is right and wrong to do. Morality is the ultimate motivation for any action. The standard of this round will be utilitarianism which states that the greatest good for the greatest amount of people is the best way to achieve morality. Utilitarianism prioritizes the pleasure of as many people as possible. I will provide 2 justifications: Justification 1: Util protects life first which is a prerequisite to any other value or standard. The Utilitarian Response. pg. 141-2. Adelman 13: Link: ILaw banned hate speech. The international community has chosen to outlaw racist hate propaganda. Article 4 of the International Convention US adherence to international law concerning hate speech is key to credibility in international human rights. Recent scandals involving right-wing hatemongers like Phil Robertson, Donald Sterling, Bill Maher, and the Sigma Impact: ILaw solves multiple scenarios for extinction—US compliance with ILaw shapes global ILaw compliance Turns case—the Constitution says we have to follow ILaw Don’t buy any unwarranted arguments- my opponent is just trying to avoid having to debate this important impact without going to the trouble of bringing up evidence. Also, don’t buy an argument that states this is far-fetched; it is clearly not. Things such as accidental nuclear war could happen at any time and trigger global extinction, US compliance with I-law helps gives it the credibility to tell other countries to follow certain international laws that help prevent these extinction scenarios. Please vote Neg. | 2/9/17 |
