As Angela Merkel once said "When it comes to human dignity, we cannot make any compromises."
Because I believe that rights are fundamental to human dignity, I affirm the resolution – Resolved: The United States ought guarantee the right to housing.
Ought: 1. to indicate duty or obligation 2.to express prudent expediency 3.to express probability or expectation 4.to express a desire or wish on the part of the speaker
The right to housing contains seven principles, laid out by the National Economic and Social Rights Initiative as:
("What is the Human Right to Housing?" https://www.nesri.org/programs/what-is-the-human-right-to-housing)
There are seven principles that are fundamental to the right to housing and are of
AND
must ensure that the cultural significance of housing and communities is not sacrified.
The value of this debate is human dignity – globally, the United Nations define human dignity as an individual or group's sense of self-respect and self-worth, physical and psychological integrity and empowerment
More specifically, The World Health Organization defines human dignity as:
(WHO October 10, 2016, http://www.who.int/mental_health/world-mental-health-day/paper_wfmh_wmhd2015.pdf , "DIGNITY IN MENTAL HEALTH") LR
The notion of dignity can simply be defined as the inherent and inalienable worth of
AND
the necessary prerequisites to ensure that people are not stripped of their dignity.
The criterion that you should use, is to vote for whoever best upholds and preserves human dignity – this is the only thing that matters in today's debate
All values are derived from preserving human dignity. Upholding dignity is the foundation in which all other values, both in politics and in society, derive their worth. It is what you must uphold in this round because it is a prerequisite.
George Kateb in 1992 Professor of Politics, Princeton, THE INNER OCEAN, 1992, p. 9
In sum, there seems to be no generally credible foundation for a critique of
AND
even as an indispensable ingredient in their own thinking about politics and society.
Dignity must be a number one value of society because human worth is the basis for creating a moral society – killing and tolerating evil against our neighbors would be unjust only under the affirmative framework
Adequate housing is critical to human development and effective decision making in society but also to the protection of human security - including protection from disease, fires, and mental illnesses
Clarence Tshitereke in 10/10/2008 (Dr. Clarence Tshitereke is employed by the Department of Housing, "The importance of adequate housing," http://mg.co.za/article/2008-10-10-the-importance-of-adequate-housing)
A lack of adequate housing not only compromises development, but eventually also constitutes a
AND
act collectively and to organise themselves and determine spatial human-settlement patterns.
Protection from unsanitary conditions is key to safeguarding human dignity
UNICEF in 2000 (January 2000 UNICEF (United Nations Children's Fund) https://www.unicef.org/wash/files/sanall.pdf "SANITATION FOR ALL: Promoting dignity and human rights") LR
Access to sanitation facilities is a fundamental human right that safeguards health and human dignity
AND
today manage to provide only two thirds of their population with sanitation services.
A human rights approach to homelessness necessarily changes the approach and leads to better solutions
Graeme Innes, Human Rights Commissioner of Australia, March 14, 2008, "Can rights solve the issue of homelessness?," Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission, https://www.humanrights.gov.au/news/speeches/can-rights-solve-issue-homelessness (Accessed 6-23-2016)
Once we acknowledge that homelessness can lead to a wide range of human rights violations
AND
to result in services which are more effective and relevant to their needs.
The right to housing not only removes the negative aspects of homelessness such as a lack of productivity, but also gives full respect and participation in democracy
Hartman in 2006 (Chester Hartman The Case for a Right to Housing Issue ~#148, Winter 2006 http://nhi.org/online/issues/148/righttohousing.html) LR
There are of course practical, cost-benefit reasons to advocate for a right
AND
, an issue that has recently been successfully fought in the courts.9
Participation is the only method of creating an effective democracy – is it really a democracy if people don't go out and vote?
As that is, democracy is the best method for achieving and sustaining human dignity
Nautiyal in 2017 (Suresh Nautiyal who lives in New Dehli, India. He is a senior journalist, campaigner and human rights activist.(2017) Democracy has the capacity to maintain human dignity" | Democracy International e.V. Retrieved February 02, 2017, from https://www.democracy-international.org/democracy-has-capacity-maintain-human-dignity) LR
It is not that democracy is the best form of governance; but for obvious
AND
people, but the greed has overtaken tragically and thus aggravated the situation.
Because of these reasons, I strongly urge you to vote affirmative and preserve human dignity
