Intro

As Angela Merkel once said "When it comes to human dignity, we cannot make any compromises."

Because I believe that rights are fundamental to human dignity, I affirm the resolution – Resolved: The United States ought guarantee the right to housing.

Framing

First, I'll begin with some important definitions –

The word 'ought' is defined by Collins English Dictionary as

Ought: 1. to indicate duty or obligation 2.to express prudent expediency 3.to express probability or expectation 4.to express a desire or wish on the part of the speaker

The right to housing contains seven principles, laid out by the National Economic and Social Rights Initiative as:

The value of this debate is human dignity – globally, the United Nations define human dignity as an individual or group's sense of self-respect and self-worth, physical and psychological integrity and empowerment

More specifically, The World Health Organization defines human dignity as:

The notion of dignity can simply be defined as the inherent and inalienable worth of

the necessary prerequisites to ensure that people are not stripped of their dignity.

The criterion that you should use, is to vote for whoever best upholds and preserves human dignity – this is the only thing that matters in today's debate

All values are derived from preserving human dignity. Upholding dignity is the foundation in which all other values, both in politics and in society, derive their worth.  It is what you must uphold in this round because it is a prerequisite.

In sum, there seems to be no generally credible foundation for a critique of

Dignity must be a number one value of society because human worth is the basis for creating a moral society – killing and tolerating evil against our neighbors would be unjust only under the affirmative framework

Adequate housing is critical to human development and effective decision making in society but also to the protection of human security - including protection from disease, fires, and mental illnesses

Protection from unsanitary conditions is key to safeguarding human dignity

The right to housing not only removes the negative aspects of homelessness such as a lack of productivity, but also gives full respect and participation in democracy

Participation is the only method of creating an effective democracy – is it really a democracy if people don't go out and vote?

As that is, democracy is the best method for achieving and sustaining human dignity
